📖 What Is International Book Day?
International Book Day, officially known as World Book and Copyright Day, is celebrated each year on April 23rd. It was established by UNESCO in 1995 to promote the power of books as a bridge between generations and cultures. The date was chosen to honor the birth or death anniversaries of some of the world’s greatest literary figures, including William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
This day is a global celebration of books and reading, highlighting the importance of literacy, intellectual freedom, and access to knowledge. Every year, events are held around the world to encourage reading, especially among young people.
📚 The Situation of Book Reading in Afghanistan
While books have the power to shape minds and inspire change, many children in Afghanistan still lack access to quality reading materials. Factors such as poverty, limited educational infrastructure, and ongoing conflict have created barriers to literacy. In many rural and underserved areas, libraries are scarce, and families often can’t afford to buy books for their children.
At Angiza Foundation, we believe that every child deserves the joy of discovering new worlds through books. Reading is not only essential for academic success — it builds empathy, boosts confidence, and opens doors to opportunities.
